Fantastic Fibers 2

I wrote on Sunday about the prizewinners at Fantastic Fibers, on display at the Yeiser Art Center in Paducah through April 30.  Here are some other pieces that caught my eye.

Lily Liu, 2368 -- detail below

Lily Liu's bowl is made of hundreds of tiny rolls of cotton fabric, tied with thread.  Each of the rolls is about an inch long, which makes the bowl an inch thick, and perhaps a quarter-inch in diameter.  I was impressed that each roll is folded so no raw edges are visible!  This is termite art at its best.

Luanne Rimel, Silent Sound -- detail below

Luanne Rimel prints photos onto fabric, then layers duplicate sections on top for subtle dimensionality.  Lots of hand quilting holds it all together.

Chris Motley, Wide Open Ears -- detail below

Chris Motley's shelf full of knitted and felted heads, each with huge ears, had just the right balance of humor and seriousness. You wouldn't call them cute, which is good, but they did bring a smile to my face.
